The town of Modica was so particular until the middle of the last century that it was called the second Venice of Italy: it is situated on the valley where two torrents merge into each other and there were a lot of large and small bridges to connect the zones of the lower area. The town is shaped as a 'broken pomegranate', climbs up the ridges and reaches the top of the castle, happy image that Gesualdo Bufalino coined for Modica.
